Frequently Asked Questions

Have Questions? We're here to answer them

What does Silica do, really?

Silica is a bay-area based, student-led volunteering platform with a focus on countering food-waste. We are dedicated to ensuring that volunteers get connected to opportunities as quickly as possible, in as little time as possible.

Simply put, we are the middleman between volunteers and service opportunities, making the process easy and hassle-free.

Who can volunteer with Silica, and what's the time commitment like?

Anyone can! No matter if you're a student or adult, anyone can sign up to assist in abating food waste through Silica.

Silica operates on the volunteers' schedule; you pick shifts that best fit your schedule, complete the shift, and be recognized through service hours.

What happens to the food that Silica saves?

Primarily, leftover but perfectly edible foods will be distributed to local food banks for anyone who needs them to claim. This way, we benefit the community, with no added cost to anyone involved in the process.

What businesses can partner with Silica?

We're more than happy to work with food-based businesses in the bay area!

The only food donations we request are those that would otherwise go to waste, and can last reasonably long in a food-bank environment (such as bread and grains).

This sound cool! How can I get started?

Please see the Volunteer tab for further information regarding sign-ups and requirements.

If you have any questions, ideas, or concerns please reach out to any of our communication channels in the Contact tab.

We're excited to have you on the team!

Any plans for growth beyond the Bay Area?

Currently, we're limited to volunteer opportunities within the Bay due to scope and our strive for healthy partners. However, growth to other regions is expected in the future.
